Thoroughly Oaxaca Art Experience 2: mixed media, natural pigments, symbols & talismans
watercolor + mixed media + culture workshop ~ ONLY 2 SPACES LEFT
with Oaxacan artist Pedro Cruz Pacheco + Corrie McCluskey
DATES: March 17 – 26, 2023
Oaxaca City, OAX, Mexico
Our adventures include field trips to an open air Sunday market, studio visits in villages outside of the city with handmade rugs, alebrijes (carved wooden figures), clay pottery made by a women’s collective, and the archaeological ruins of Monte Albán. We’ll spend an afternoon exploring famed artist Francisco Toledo’s CaSa arts center and a papermaking studio. We’ll add locally-sourced natural pigments (cochineal, indigo, marigold) to our toolkits, and make uniquely Oaxacan memories on paper in a handmade artist book that we create.
We’ll be painting together on a beautiful terrace surrounded by a lush garden. Pedro is an amazing watercolorist who incorporates personal symbols, talismans, and the natural world into his art, and he’ll patiently guide you in exploring watercolor + painting with natural pigments. Corrie will introduce mixed media + collage to experiment with mark making, using fragments, found objects and bits & pieces of ephemera. This workshop is for all levels of art experience, and we welcome beginners!

Día de Muertos Workshop: watercolor, group altar, sand tapestry
art + culture workshop with Oaxacan artist Pedro Cruz Pacheco
Friday, October 27 – Sunday, November 5, 2023
Oaxaca City, OAX, Mexico
DAY OF THE DEAD CELEBRATION OF ART + SACRED MEMORY IN THE HEART OF OAXACA
We’ll visit a mercado to shop for altar decorations and offerings, assemble a group altar, make a tapete de arena (sand tapestry), visit cemeteries where Oaxaqueños lovingly decorate the graves of their ancestors and bring offerings to share with their spirits. We will catch a comparsa – the traditional Muertos parade – along the pedestrian street as our schedule permits.
Group field trips include a visit to a renowned alebrije (carved wooden objects) artisan couple, and the Mujeres del Barro Rojo (Women of the Red Clay) who are “guardians of the identity & pottery tradition of their community” (where they will have their own Día de Muertos altar).
